Nubia, the handset subsidiary of ZTE, officially launched its flagship Z11 smartphone in India, where the Chinese vendor plans to invest $100 million over the next five years to expand its operations in the world’s second largest smartphone market.

Mai Donghai, an SVP at Nubia, told the Economic Times India is its first priority and it aims to be the top online brand in the country, without stating a timeframe. Mai explained the time is right for expansion given the rapid rollout of 4G networks by the country’s leading mobile operators and 4G newcomer Reliance Jio.

He said Nubia plans to open an R&D centre in India and may acquire design companies to support its local R&D. The company is holding discussions with contract manufacturers about assembling smartphones locally with plans to start production soon, the Times reported.

Nubia forged an exclusive partnership for its flagship smartphone with Amazon in India. The bezel-less Z11 smartphone, which comes with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of inbuilt storage, is priced at INR29,999 ($445) on Amazon.in.

The Nubia N1, which debuted in China in July, will also be made available in the Indian market via Amazon.in. It is priced at INR11,999.
