Line targets emerging markets with Lite app

23 JUL 2015

Japanese app giant LINE unveiled a “Lite” version of its core messaging app, which uses less storage space and data.

With the company noting that its service is used by more than 205 million users monthly in 230 countries, it said that the new app will make it available to users “in areas where network infrastructure is less developed and lower-end smartphones are more widely used.”

The app retains core features such as text, sticker and image-based communication. And while audio and video calls and some other features are not supported, “LINE plans to introduce new features in the future”.

The app will initially be available in eleven markets (Algeria, Cambodia, Colombia, Egypt, India, Mexico, Pakistan, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Korea and Vietnam). More will be supported in future, “depending on the demands and needs of users in each country”.
