Smartphone giant Samsung is expected to post its strongest quarterly results in more than two years on the back of buoyant sales of its flagship Galaxy S7 smartphones, Reuters reported.

The company is set to release earnings estimates for Q2 on Thursday. Analysts forecast a 13 per cent increase in operating profit to KRW7.8 trillion ($6.8 billion) for the April-June period, with its mobile unit the top contributor for the second straight quarter, the news agency said. The mobile division’s profit contribution for Q2 is expected to hit KRW4.3 trillion.

Samsung had an operating profit of KRW8.5 trillion in Q1 2014, the last time it hit impressive numbers.

In April the South Korean firm said the early success of the Galaxy S7 was demonstrated by “robust sell-out figures and low inventory levels compared to predecessors”. Operating profit of its IT & Mobile Communications unit increased 42 per cent year-on-year in Q1 to KRW3.89 trillion, on revenue of KRW27.60 trillion, up 7 per cent.

Reuters reported the vendor shipped about 16 million Galaxy S7 units in Q2, with margins boosted by the higher-priced curved-screen model outselling the flat-screen model. Analysts expect its profit to remain strong in the final two quarters of the year.
