Mobile shopping in China surged 133 per cent in Q2 compared to the same period a year ago, outpacing overall online growth and exceeding shopping via PC for the first time.

Mobile gross merchandising volumes (GMV) reached CNY443.5 billion ($69.3 billion) in Q2, while overall online shopping GMV increased 40 per cent to CNY872.5 billion, according to Beijing-based iResearch.

Mobile shopping now accounts for 50.8 per cent of online GMV (see chart, click to enlarge), up from 40 per cent in Q4 last year. The PC-mobile sales ratio was 70:30 just a year ago (Q2 2014).

Alibaba maintained its number one ranking in mobile shopping in Q2, with a market share of 83.7 per cent. JD’s share inched up 6.1 per cent to put it in second place, while Vipshop took third place with a 2.5 per cent share.

iResearch said others like Meilishuo and Mohujie maintained their rapid growth, but the smaller players all had less than a 1 per cent share.
