IoT platform company PTC updated its Vuforia augmented reality (AR) platform, with the introduction of new capabilities intended to spread accessibility of the technology.

PTC, which acquired Vuforia from Qualcomm last year for $65 million, said it was introducing VuMark to Vuforia, a customisable visual code that can be affixed to any product or machine, and is “intended to visually indicate to a user that an AR experience is available”.

VuMark, it added, can enable “AR experiences to be attached to any product or object”.

In addition, PTC said the update will address the growing need for AR in the enterprise, by providing support for Microsoft HoloLens and Windows 10 tablets.

The company’s president and general manager Jay Wright said these two developments were “major milestones on our vision to democratise AR”.

“First, with VuMark we have paved the way for product manufacturers and marketers to add AR experiences to any product,” he said. “And with support for Windows 10 and HoloLens, we’re creating new opportunities for developers to address the growing need for enterprise solutions.”

Vuforia has powered more than 30,000 applications on the App Store and Google Play, with more than 275 million app downloads.

It also supports an active developer ecosystem with more than 250,000 registered developers and more than 30,000 projects in development.
