YouTube launched an app for children that only features videos safe for kids, and will feature larger images and bold icons to accommodate “little thumbs”.

It is currently only available in the US via Google Play and Apple’s App Store, and will soon also be available on Kurio and nabi kids’ tablets.

The app, which is apparently the “first Google product built from the ground up with little ones in mind”, includes voice search for kids who can’t spell or type and will have channels such as National Geographic KidsReading Rainbow and Thomas the Tank Engine as well as playlists split into four categories: shows, music, learning and explore.

It has a timer for parents to limit how much time children spend on the app, as well as an option to turn off background music and sound effects to keep noise levels down, plus the option to switch off search settings so kids can only see pre-selected content.
