Yahoo launched a new version of its iPhone news app, which incorporates technology from the Summly news reading app that it acquired in March for a reported $30 million.

According to a blog post by Marissa Mayer, the company’s CEO, the new Yahoo App on iPhone has been “designed with smaller screens in mind”, with story summaries created using Summly’s natural-language algorithms and machine learning technology.

It allows users to select the topics they are interested in with the software learning over time what content they prefer. It also features improved search capability with video and images better catered for.

Yahoo is continuing to finesse its mobile strategy with recent announcements that it would no longer support its Yahoo Mail and Messenger for feature phones, Yahoo SMS alerts and the Yahoo Kids app.

The company also ended availability of its BlackBerry app in March as part of its product consolidation, saying the move was to sharpen its focus.

As well as closing apps, Yahoo recently re-introduced Yahoo Mail for the iPad and Android tablets and Yahoo Weather for the iPhone.

Mayer said in February that the company could benefit from reducing the number of smartphone apps it offers to between 12 and 15 apps compared to the current “scattered” portfolio.
