Yahoo has launched a video app which it wants to become “the destination for the world’s best video creators and their awesome content”.

Robby Stein, director of product management, said in a blog post that the company wanted to recreate the experience of channel surfing on TV with Yahoo Screen. Users can swipe through episodes and channels of content with several ways of finding content, including trending clips and search.

Content partners include Viacom, which provides shows from its Comedy Central channel, such as The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and archive footage from Saturday Night Live. The app gives access to a total of more than 1,000 hours of comedy content.

“Yahoo Screen now offers you access to some of the most storied franchises in comedy history, on any device,” said Stein.

A former Google employee, Stein was CEO of start-up Stamped which Yahoo acquired in October 2012. “Since joining Yahoo, the mobile team in NYC has worked tirelessly to bring together design, technology and content to create an app experience that helps you find entertaining videos,” Stein said.

In July, Yahoo touted progress with its mobile app strategy, with usage of recently-launched titles increasing strongly.

Back in October 2012, Mayer emphasised the need for Yahoo to have a more cohesive mobile strategy compared to the “previously fragmented and unfocused products”.

Since then the company has increased the size of its mobile team six-fold through recruitment and acquisitions, while monthly mobile users passed 340 million in June.
