Yahoo has launched a mobile browser and search tool as it attempts to make a greater impact in the mobile sector.

Yahoo Axis has initially been launched for iOS devices and can be downloaded from Apple’s App store. Other platforms are set to follow, according to Forbes. Axis can also be added to desktop browsers Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari as a plug-in.

Axis gives users visual images of web pages rather than links when they enter a search, which can be navigated with horizontal finger swipes. When users click on the visual results, Axis switches to browser mode. Users can swipe from the top of the screen to return the results page.

When users log in to the browser, searches, bookmarks and recently visited sites are shown on a homepage, which also shows trending topics. If users are in the middle of reading an article, they can select an option to continue on another device, where the article will be waiting.

Axis is built on HTML5 technology and includes sharing tools for email, Twitter and Pinterest, according to Forbes, which added that there are plans for Android and Windows Phone versions of the browser, as well as a Metro version for Microsoft’s Windows 8. However, it’s believed there are no plans to launch Axis for BlackBerry devices.

Yahoo isn’t currently receiving revenue from the browser but Forbes said the company expects to integrate paid listings into search results in the future.
