The number of apps available for Microsoft’s Windows Store for its recently-launched Windows 8 PCs and tablets has surpassed 20,000.

According to Win App Update, the number of apps worldwide on the store reached 20,610 on 20 November – with 87 percent (17,958) of those being free to download.

Not all titles are available in every market. Canada has the largest selection (14,000), followed by the US (13,000) and the UK (11,000).

The apps tally is seen as impressive as Windows 8 only launched in October. At the current run rate, Windows Store should pass the 30,000 apps milestone by year-end.

Apple’s rival Mac-based App Store – launched in January 2011 – reportedly hit 10,000 in April.

WIndows Store is distinct from Microsoft’s Windows Phone Store that provides apps for its Windows Phone-powered smartphones.
