Number one US operator Verizon Wireless is opening up its V Cast Apps storefront to the Android developer community. A post on the company’s Verizon Developer Community (VDC) Hot Topics website noted that “V Cast Apps is now accepting applications for Android. If you’re one of the thousands of Android developers worldwide, this is your opportunity to share your applications with America’s largest wireless network.” Reports add that Verizon will offer V Cast Apps across smartphones running Android 2.2, including Droid 2, Droid X and Droid Incredible. Developers who have previously submitted V Cast Apps for BlackBerry and who wish to extend the same application to Android must re-submit their app concept with an upgraded version.

Verizon Wireless introduced V Cast Apps in late March to BlackBerry Storm users, before extending it across the BlackBerry portfolio. The operator claims the VDC has now attracted more than 5,000 participants and V Cast Apps can go from concept submission to consumer availability in as few as two weeks. Verizon is giving 70 percent of sales revenue to developers and letting them set the price of their apps. V Cast Apps and its operator billing functionality may prove to be a more attractive developer proposition than Google’s own Android Market store. Android Market is only supported by carrier billing in a select few countries; also, free apps dominate the store, and paid apps are only available in 14 of the 46 countries that Android Market serves.
