Verizon and Amazon ink app alliance

14 NOV 2012

US number one operator Verizon Wireless is selling smartphones featuring Amazon’s app suite preloaded, providing access to the online retailer’s shopping, MP3, fashion, ebook and audiobook products.

The operator said that it has loaded individual Amazon titles onto previous devices but, starting this month, the content will be integrated – supporting single sign-in, personalised recommendations, customer reviews and one-click ordering.

The move is significant because it will see Verizon customers provided with an integrated alternative to Google’s Play store for multimedia content.  The companies have not so far said that Amazon’s Appstore for Android will also be integrated with the app suite, creating an even more rounded alternative to the Google property.

The deal is reported to be exclusive for an unspecified period.

The first device to support the integrated Amazon app suite is the HTC-made Droid DNA.
