The most popular ways for developers to measure app performance are user feedback and star ratings in app stores, according to a survey by app performance management firm Crittercism.

The research found that 42 per cent of developers look at user feedback and 35 per cent look at their app store rating. Just 12 per cent of developers make use of application performance management technology while 9 per cent use ad hoc scripts and processes.

Crittercism said most developers are “behind the eight ball” in terms of measuring and managing app performance by taking a “very simplistic or reactive approach”.

The survey also found that rapid development cycles are fairly common, with 45 per cent of respondents saying they release an app per month and 13 per cent, once every two weeks.

Just under a fifth (19 per cent) said they release apps twice a year, and 1 per cent said they only publish one app per year.

In terms of operating systems developers are working with, 48 per cent said their apps support iOS, with 33 per cent opting for Android. Windows Phone was the primary focus for 11 per cent of respondents.
