App development platform and tools provider Unity announced that it now has more than one million registered developers and received more than six million downloads.

The number of monthly active developers is approaching 300,000 with 2.5 million hours spent building apps on the platform in the past month. Based on Evans Data research, Unity claims that nearly two percent of all active software developers around the world are making use of its technology.

At the end of 2011, the company’s technology – used to build interactive 3D and 2D mobile and web content – was used by 750,000 developers, up from 250,000 a year earlier.

Unity said its recent Flash add-on and offering Unity iOS and Unity Android basic for free for a limited period, have helped fuel uptake. The company expects to maintain rapid growth as it expands in Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe.

Developers from the smallest start-ups to large development firms have used the technology to build games, simulations and training apps, visualisations and art installations, Unity said.
