Uber, the car-booking app maker, signed a deal with America Movil to bring the service to the Latin American operator group’s customer base in Mexico.

In addition to the app featuring on Android devices used by America Movil subscribers, Telcel mobile brand-customers will receive a MXN150 ($11) discount when they first use the service.

Partner drivers in Mexico will also receive special discounts on Telcel mobile services.

Uber has been available in Mexico City since August last year, since when the company said it has seen “tremendous growth” in the region. It recently launched in Tijuana and Monterrey in Mexico and Brazil’s capital city Brasilia.

In a blog post the company said the partnership “will help us continue our rapid growth in the region and deliver even more value for Uber riders and partner drivers”.

The company added that the partnership in Mexico will “serve as a model across other regions in the world”.

America Movil is one of the biggest players in Latin America and the Caribbean. Reuters was told by an Uber representative that the company did not pay America Movil as part of the tie-up.

European product development team

The company this week also announced the creation of a mobile engineering and product development team based in Amsterdam, the location of its international headquarters.

Uber’s first engineer, Conrad Whelan, who will lead the new team, said in a blog post that the team will initially consist of with 10 Dutch engineers and product designers tasked with evolving the core rider and driver experiences on smartphones and building new capabilities for product partnerships.

Whelan said the plan is to expand the team to 30 people within a year and more in the future, with the company keen to draw from “the deep mobile talent in the Netherlands and across Europe”.

Bloomberg reported last week that Uber was close to securing a funding round that would value the company at between $35 billion and $40 billion. A previous funding round in the summer valued the company at $18.2 billion.
