Twitter launched a music streaming app for the iPhone as it looks to expand its multimedia content.

#music recommends and streams songs based on who users follow on Twitter and the tweets they make as well as artist recommendations. Users can also tweet songs from the app.

Previews of tracks will come from iTunes by default but subscribers to Rdio and Spotify can also access tracks via the catalogues of these services. Twitter said other music service providers will be added.

Users can navigate to #NowPlaying to view and listen to songs that have been tweeted by people and artists that they follow.

The app is now available in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. An Android version is in the pipeline although no release date was announced. A web version is also available.

Twitter’s launch of the Vine video sharing app around four months ago is another play to make the microblogging service into a multimedia hub.
