Twitter users will soon be seeing a new feature on their home timelime: a recap of top tweets “determined by engagement and other factors” from the accounts they follow that they may have missed while away from the app.

As part of this latest effort to improve user engagement, these tweets will appear under a ‘while you were away’ heading for iOS users to begin with and will eventually make their way to Android devices and the Twitter website.

Users who are on Twitter often will see less of these recap tweets while those who only “check in on Twitter now and then for a quick snapshot of what’s happening” will see them more, the microblogging service said.

It added that its “goal is to help you keep up – or catch up – with your world, no matter how much time you spend on Twitter. With a few improvements to the home timeline we think we can do a better job of delivering on that promise without compromising the real time nature of Twitter”.

Last November, Twitter started monitoring the apps users have on their smartphones, in order to better target content. The company said it would use the ‘app graph’ data to promote content within users’ timelines that is most likely to interest them.

Other uses of this include improved ‘who to follow’ suggestions, and delivery of tweets, accounts or other content deemed to be of interest.
