Twitter has acquired location-based app Spindle as it continues its efforts to make the microblogging service into a multimedia hub.

The Spindle app gives users real-time information about events that are taking place close to their current location.

In a post on its blog, Spindle said that by joining forces with Twitter “we can do so much more to help you find interesting, timely, and useful information about what’s happening around you”.

It added that Spindle will be “sunsetting” the service to focus on its development work with Twitter, with the team relocating to Twitter’s San Francisco offices.

Twitter’s efforts to expand its service have seen the launch of its #music app for the iPhone in April and video sharing app Vine at the beginning of the year, which it acquired in October 2012.

A value for the deal was not disclosed.
