Cloud communications company Twilio launched its Twilio Client for Android, a software development kit which it said “makes it incredibly easy for mobile developers to integrate VoIP capabilities into their Android applications.”

Following the launch of a similar kit for iOS, Twilio said the Android release means that it can address 75 percent of the worldwide smartphone base.

Developers can integrate the technology into apps “with no contracts or setup fees.”

Features supported include real-time presence, enabling developers to build buddy lists into apps so that users can see who is online; app backgrounding, enabling voice calls to be received when an app is not being used; and cross-platform interoperability, supporting VoIP calls between Android, iOS and web browsers as well as bridging to traditional phone calls.
