Sygic navigation app passes 5M Android downloads

22 FEB 2012
Turn-by-turn voice-guided GPS navigation app Sygic passed the 5 million download mark in Android Market, which the company said makes it the first Android GPS app to do so. The milestone has been reached less than a year after the app, which covers regions in four continents, was first launched.

Sygic said that such has been the demand for the app, it had to rebuild its server infrastructure. Sygic is in the top 10 for the free travel and local apps category in the US and 38 other countries. According to Sygic, only Google Maps Navigation is ahead in terms of downloads.

The news came shortly after Skobbler announced it was to end development of its navigation app for Android. This company cited issues with monetising Android apps, as well as competition from Google's own mapping products.
