Spotify confirmed its app has surpassed 100 million monthly active users, of which 30 million pay for its premium ad-free service.

A spokesperson confirmed the 100 million statistic, but told Mobile World Live “we’re not providing any additional comment”, adding that founder and CEO Daniel Ek would host a chat in Cannes, Paris later in the week to shed more light on the news.

Spotify has the biggest paid subscriber base of any music streaming service, although it is still to post a profit.

It recently announced that its Discover Weekly Feature, which gives tailored music recommendations, is used by 40 million people, with nearly 5 billion tracks streamed since its launch in July 2015.

The app maker is dealing with competition from services like Apple Music and Tidal. In 2015, its net loss worsened to €173 million, from €162 million in 2014.

However, revenue jumped to €1.95 billion, a 45 per cent increase from 2014, and it had 89 million active monthly users at the end of 2015, up from 60 million a year earlier.

Earlier in the month, Ek said he has no plans of selling the company, and that “my selfish ambition with Spotify is just trying to show … that we can create one of those super companies here in Europe”.
