Sony has stopped charging a $99 publisher licence fee for developers looking to bring apps to the PlayStation Mobile platform, in a bid to drive uptake.

The fee was waived from 7 May, meaning developers no longer have to pay a fee for their apps to appear on PlayStation-certified smartphones and the PlayStation Vita mobile games device.

PlayStation-certified devices include much of the Sony Xperia range, Sharp Aquos smartphones and the HTC One line.

Sony’s plan to extend its PlayStation content beyond the games console was first revealed with the launch of the PlayStation Mobile SDK 1 in November 2012.

The PlayStation Mobile website has been revamped to include a game section and a direct link to the Dev Portal.
