Sony announced PlayStation Suite, which will enable it to deliver PlayStation-branded gaming content to mobile devices powered by Android. In addition to expanding the PlayStation brand toward more casual gamers and the growing smartphone segment, the company said that the strategy will “offer game developers and publishers the potential to further expand their business opportunities to these devices.” While initially the company will focus on offering titles from the original PlayStation for mobile devices, it also said that it will provide a new game development environment “to ensure new and compelling content is delivered for PS Suite,” and providing further opportunities for developers. Sony is also planning to make its PlayStation Store available to Android-based terminals.

In order to support the hardware side of its strategy, Sony has also announced its PlayStation Certified licence programme for hardware manufacturers. The company will offer support to “ensure the delivery of quality PlayStation experiences across various devices,” with capable devices also able to feature a PlayStation logo. Devices must run Android 2.3 or above, and it is likely that both tablet devices and smartphones will be able to support PlayStation Suite. It is widely expected that Sony Ericsson, Sony’s handset affiliate, will announce a gaming-oriented device at next month’s GSMA Mobile World Congress.
