Location-based social app start-up SocialRadar has secured $12.75 million in Series A funding, as it prepares to launch its technology for iPhone, Android, and Google Glass.

SocialRadar is the brainchild of Michael Chasen (pictured), founder and former CEO of online education platform Blackboard. The app will allow users to determine which members of their various social networks are present in a location and provide information about the relevant individuals.

According to Chasen, SocialRadar is “on the cutting edge of developing social location-based technology” and is a response to the 1.1 billion people with smartphones capable of broadcasting location and the 2.8 billion people with online social profiles.

“In the future, technology will inevitably combine the smartphone’s location with the power of social networks, enabling users to walk into a room and be aware of the people and connections around them,” he said.

SocialRadar is currently accepting registrations for its beta testing programme.

The funding has been led by New Enterprise Associates (NEA), Grotech Ventures and SWaN & Legend Ventures. Several angel investors and technology leaders are also participating, including Steve Case, co-founder of America Online and David Morin, co-founder and CEO of Path.

Dayna Gratson from NEA will join SocialRadar’s board of directors, along with Steve Fredrick from Grotech Ventures and F SWaN & Legend Venture Partners’ Fred Schaufeld.
