The Smart TV Alliance launched SDK 4.0, a software kit which it said gives developers access to 58 million compatible TVs in a single, integrated process through helping them “develop apps faster”.

More than 6,000 developers have registered with the group’s Common Developer Portal, to develop, test and publish apps for all compatible LG, TP Vision (for Philips), Toshiba and Panasonic smart TVs.

Devs will be able to run multi-resolution apps and use more video and audio formats, with features including a device emulator for the Smart TV Alliance Smart Home Specification 1.0; user agent customisation; support for multiple browser resolutions; and an update of CSS, HTML and JavaScript validations.

The Alliance is also offering free premium level support on its portal to new and existing basic developers under a new incentive programme.

This includes unlimited app submissions, Skype support on technical questions and faster responses on quality assurance issues.
