Music discovery app firm Shazam has taken advantage of Nokia’s development environment Qt to introduce an application designed specifically to run on the latest version of Symbian. Only three handsets are currently available on Symbian ^3 with a fourth scheduled for release next month. Qt enables developers to create an app once and then port it across the Symbian OS as well as the company’s new MeeGo OS. Nokia announced in October that Qt would be its focus as the platform to deliver apps supported by both Symbian and MeeGo.

Shazam’s app is now available for download for free from Nokia’s Ovi Store. Users can also take a 30-day unlimited free trial of features from the paid-for premium service called Encore. At the end of the trial, users can either pay a one-off fee of £2.99 or €3.99 for the premium service or continue to tag up to 5 songs per month with the free Shazam app. In addition, the app will be pre-loaded on all new N8 handsets in the coming months.

Nokia has so far released three handsets based on the latest version of Symbian: the N8, C7 and C6-01. The first of the three to be released was the N8, which suffered a well-documented delay, at the end of September 2010. The N8 has been followed by the C7 and C6-01 handsets. The fourth Symbian^3-based handset that can download the Shazam app is the E7 which missed its original launch date in Q4 2010 and will now make its debut next month.
