Shazam has launched the latest version of its content identification and discovery technology, Shazam 5.0, for the iPhone and iPod.

The update allows content to be identified in one second, making it the world’s fastest content identification and discovery app for music, television and media advertising, according to the company.

It also features a redesigned user interface and improvements to the integration with social networks.

Other new capabilities include support for Brazilian Portuguese, South American Spanish and Korean, taking the total number of languages offered to 33.

The new technology is featured in the Shazam Free app, premium version Encore, and the version offered by AIDS charity (RED).

“With the release of Shazam 5.0 for iPhone and iPod touch, Shazam fans will be able to get the information they’re looking for almost instantaneously, giving them lightning-fast access to content and a deeper experience surrounding the song, TV show or TV advertisement they have just tagged,” said Shazam EVP for Product Alex Musil.

Existing features, such as LyricPlay – which provides lyrics to tagged songs – links to buy music, videos, tour information, reviews and other popular songs by the artist, all remain.

In November 2011, the company bought back its audio recognition technology and related patents that identify music from US performing rights company Broadcast Music Inc, giving it the ability to integrate the technology into its services to a greater extent and expand its product line. In January, the company launched its first all-new app since 2008 with its Shazam Player music app for Apple iOS devices.
