Enterprise computing players SAP and its Sybase subsidiary announced a series of new mobile apps built on the Sybase Unwired Platform, intended to mobilise business processes and business information across key verticals including manufacturing, consumer products, utilities, high tech, oil and gas, and retail. The new apps join the Sybase Mobile Sales application for SAP CRM and the Sybase Mobile Workflow application for SAP Business Suite, which were released during 2010. Also announced was the next version of the Unwired Platform (2.0), along with an enhanced software development kit which will be available “within the next few months.”

The new apps announced by the company, which are “designed to drive short-term, bottom-line results for businesses and employees,” include SAP Field Service, SAP Retail Execution and SAP EAM Work Order, alongside a number of human resources, finance and sales products. While it did not provide availability details for each product, it noted that in some cases products are scheduled for general availability “in the next few months.”

Sybase said that Unwired Platform 2.0 and its accompanying SDK “address the needs of both mobile and web developers by providing a comprehensive, standards-based environment for the development of customised native and Web applications across various device platforms.” It also enables IT departments to manage the entire application life cycle from deployment to provisioning, managing and updating through Sybase’s “industry leading mobile device management solution,” Afaria. The company said that its hybrid web container architecture delivers the advantages of customised web application development alongside rich native app functionality, including support for technologies such as HTML5, Javascript and CSS. It supports platforms including iOS, BlackBerry and Microsoft’s legacy Windows Mobile platform, with Android availability planned for the second quarter of 2011.
