Samsung has launched a specially-created range of apps in nine Indian languages, as it looks to cater for its growing user base in the world’s second largest mobile market.

The apps are available in Hindi, Punjabi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi and Gujarati. Samsung India’s head of mobile, Vineet Taneja, told The Wall Street Journal that more languages are in the pipeline.

The apps are currently only available on the high-end Galaxy Grand and Galaxy S4 smartphones and Tab 3 tablet but Samsung plans to bring them to sub-$100 devices such as the Galaxy Star later this month.

With more than half a billion young consumers in India, smartphones and tablets are becoming more popular in the country as progress is made with high-speed networks and lower internet prices.

However, the country is still relatively underserved by mobile software and apps in local languages, with the majority of people uncomfortable with English.

Local handset maker Intex Technologies has previously launched apps in a number of Indian languages for its smartphones, according to The Wall Street Journal, but as the leading smartphone vendor in the country, Samsung’s efforts are likely to have a bigger impact.
