BlackBerry maker RIM said it will expose APIs to developers that will enable them to add “tap to share” functionality, using the integrated NFC connectivity in its latest BlackBerry devices.

The company announced its BlackBerry Tag app this week, which will be included in the next BlackBerry platform update. This will allow users to share contact information, documents, URLs, photos and other multimedia content by tapping devices together.

Developers will subsequently be able to add similar functionality to their own apps.

Jim Balsillie, co-CEO at RIM, said: “BlackBerry Tag opens a new dimension to the BlackBerry platform that is powerful, simple and intuitive and we think it will be welcomed by both users and developers.”

RIM recently announced a portfolio of BlackBerry devices which include NFC connectivity.
