Research In Motion (RIM) is rumoured to have acquired DataViz for US$50 million, developers of a document viewing application that has been preloaded on BlackBerrys for the last few years.  A report from IntoMobile notes that the price is small enough to not require public disclosure. US-based DataViz offers a suite of mobile apps for all of the major Microsoft office formats, including Word to Go, Sheet to Go, Slideshow to Go, and PDF to Go. The free version available on most BlackBerrys enables users to read any files for PowerPoint, Word, Excel or Adobe Reader, although editing can only be carried out on the premium, paid-for version.

IntoMobile notes that there are also versions of the software available for iPhone, iPad, Android and Maemo platforms, although it is not known whether RIM will choose to discontinue these offerings. The article adds that, as a result of the reported acquisition, DataViz has stopped development of its webOS document viewing app. If the acquisition is a done deal, it follows RIM’s purchase last month of Cellmania, a developer of mobile content delivery technology, aimed at bolstering its BlackBerry App World content store.
