Pocket Gamer reports that games company Gameloft is set to offer pay-per-download versions of two of its titles, after an in-app purchase option had failed to be a success with consumers. The company had offered two titles, Sacred Odyssey: Rise of Ayden and Starfront: Collision (pictured), which allowed customers to play free of charge for 15 minutes, before presenting an in-app purchases option to enable continued play. In a statement, the company told the publication that “we’ve taken into account feedback from many players, who did not feel comfortable with the new free model with in-app purchases.”

While the in-app purchase products will remain available, the report suggests the move is an “unashamed u-turn” by Gameloft, which had previously stated it had adopted the new model to meet customer demand for products which include a free element. Starfront: Collision was released on 17 February 2011, while Sacred Odyssey: Rise of Ayden was made available on 3 February 2011.

Previous reports have indicated that developers and consumers have an appetite for in-app purchases, particularly with regard to Apple’s iOS platform. In-app purchases are seen as a way to enable developers to make money, while also meeting customer demand for free products. Rovio, developer of Angry Birds, recently said it has seen a 40 percent uptake of its in-app purchases.
