Twitter said that promoted tweets will now also appear on third-party mobile apps and websites through a syndication programme, starting with partnerships with Flipboard and Yahoo Japan.

“For the thousands of brands already advertising on Twitter, these new partnerships open a significant opportunity to extend the reach of their message to a larger audience,” the microblogging site said.

In the case of Flipboard, which already integrates organic Tweets into its app, promoted tweets “will have the same look and feel that is native to the Flipboard experience”.

Twitter said that in the third quarter of 2014 there were approximately 185 billion tweet impressions outside of the core website and app “because Tweets can flow from Twitter to other mediums seamlessly, like TV, websites and mobile applications.”

Last month, Twitter added several new features to try and increase user engagement, such as ‘while you were away’ tweets and a mobile video tool.
