Location directory app company Poynt announced a joint venture targeting the Chinese market, working with China Youth Goyor Technology, with the intention of signing up “at least 20 million active users” in or around August 2012.

The China Youth Poynt platform will be based on the current Poynt local search platform, but additional functionality, such as local news, video messaging, gaming, e-books and novels, social networking services, and e-wallets are being considered for inclusion.

The venture intends to enter into agreements with “data partners, telecom providers and original device manufacturers” to drive adoption of the service using a preloaded, subscription-based model.

China Youth Goyor is an affiliate of the China Youth League, a movement of the People’s Republic of China, which has more than 83 million members between the ages of 14 and 28 – “the majority of which are typically well-educated and influential.”

As an initial aim, China Youth Goyor will focus on obtaining the necessary licences for the launch of China Youth Poynt, securing data service agreements and preload agreements with major telcos in China, and “facilitating consumer usage of the Poynt mobile platform in China.”

In a statement, Poynt said that “as many as 60 percent of CYL’s membership may become active users" (approximately 50 million) of the platform. It will also be marketed to the broader Chinese smartphone user base.

Late in 2011, Poynt launched its services in India in partnership with content provider Times Internet Limited.
