Location search app company Poynt said it had passed the 9 million unique user mark across North America, Western Europe and Australia, growing from 3.2 million at the end of June 2010. It said that of the 700,000 new users added during June 2011, more than 500,000 were Android users – of which more than 300,000 came from preloads of the app. The number of average queries per active user has also increased, to 30 from 21 which, along with the user base growth, saw the number of transactions reach 74 million in June 2011 from 24 million in June 2010.

Poynt said that the preloading of its app on devices “facilitates user trials and continued usage, and has proven highly effective in narrowing the gap between general product awareness and actual user adoption.” Andrew Osis, president and CEO of the company, said that “we are working on signing new preload agreements with additional carriers in the US, Western Europe, and Asia, which together could add up to more than 50 million potential new users of Poynt.”

Poynt is currently readying its timesPoynt app, following a partnership with Indian media company Times Internet, which it said will represent “the single largest geographical app launch the company has undertaken.” timesPoynt is currently in final beta testing, and is expected to be launched in the current quarter. It has been “designed to take advantage of India’s rapidly growing feature phone and smartphone markets across multiple device platforms.”

According to Osis, “we expect our increased user acquisition and retention will generate broadening revenue streams over time.” Its model is based on user queries, page views, advertising and transactions within the app. The company has also inked a deal with Gladios IP to “help it protect and monetise the increasing value of its patent portfolio.”
