Mobile local search and advertising app Poynt has gained a “unique augmented reality feature,” which is being made available for users of the app on Samsung’s Android-powered Galaxy devices.

The move follows a deal which will see Poynt being added to the Samsung Apps portal, which the developer said “features select apps that Samsung considers most valuable for its customers.”

The AR support will allow users to overlay search results with the real-world environment as viewed through the device camera, which it said provides the user with a “powerful augmented local search experience.”

Poynt said its deep device integration creates an “immersive user experience that will showcase the powerful capabilities of Samsung’s Android devices.”

The inclusion of Poynt in Samsung Apps is significant, as the company “estimates that its retention rate of users who discover Poynt through a pre-load or on-device offering is approximately 40 percent over time.”

Poynt will be available on Samsung Apps in the United States, India, Canada, Germany, Australia, Italy, the United Kingdom, France and Spain.

Andrew Osis, CEO of Poynt, said: “Poynt has experienced incredible user uptake and retention on the Android platform. We expect our long term service offering through Samsung Apps to accelerate our user numbers globally, with the potential to add 50 million new users over time.”
