Pinterest added “app pins” to its social sharing service, a move some observers said could deliver a new way to solve the challenge of app discovery.

The new pins will enable iOS device users to install an app without the need to leave Pinterest. These pins will only be shown to users of iPhones or iPads.

“Let’s say you’re Pinning workout inspiration to your Marathon Training board. If you see a fitness app that helps you reach your goals, you can download it right from Pinterest,” it said in a blog post.

Pinterest has already created a “Staff Picks” board, while Apple has created an App Store profile “for a collection of the latest and greatest app Pins”, Pinterest said.

With the number of apps available reaching into seven figures, it has become more and more difficult for developers to get attention for their products.

And with social an important tool in app discovery, the ability to share apps via Pinterest may enable developers to more easily tap into this.

The New York Times said that as yet, Pinterest is not monetising app pins. But with Facebook and Twitter offering paid app promotion, it would certainly provide the company with a revenue option should it choose to do so.

So far, the service is only available to iOS users, and with Apple launching an App Store page to support Pinterest’s new product, it seems likely that this may be the status quo for a while.
