Twitter-owned Periscope said in the one year since it launched, more than 200 million broadcasts were created using the live streaming app.

It also said “over 110 years” of live video were watched on its Android and iOS apps. Its ‘time watched’ metric does not include time spent watching broadcasts within Twitter, on the web or replays, it clarified.

It believes the metric is “most reflective of the value we’re creating for people and the world”, whereas “optimising for DAU/MAU doesn’t properly motivate our team to create a product that people love”.

In January, it became possible for users to view live Periscope streams directly within the Twitter app, instead of users being redirected to the Periscope app.

The move was part of several features introduced by Twitter’s CEO, Jack Dorsey, to improve user growth.
