An app store for the Pebble smart watch will go live early in 2014, with developers now able to upload their products via the Pebble Developer Portal.

The company behind the smart watch claimed the app store will be the first dedicated directory for wearable technology apps and will include search and browsing functionality.

Users will be able to download Pebble watch faces and apps using the iOS or Android Pebble smartphone apps, which link to the wearable hardware.

It will include app categories for Daily, Remotes, Sports & Fitness, Notifications, Tools & Utilities and Games. Each category will show a selection of the newest apps and those that have been rated as the best.

If apps require a companion iOS or Android app, links to Google Play and Apple’s App Store can be included with the app store listing.

Android or iOS apps that make use of the Pebble Sports API but do not require a specific Pebble app to be installed can have an entry in the appstore that links to their native app.

In November, Pebble launched the Pebble SDK 2.0 which added APIs for Javascript, Accelerometer, Data Logging and Persistent Storage. The response to the SDK 2.0 was “phenomenal”, according to Pebble. Full integration with iOS 7 was introduced at the same time.

Pebble said in November that 190,000 Pebble devices were in use, with two million apps and watch faces downloaded. More than 10,000 developers were developing apps for Pebble at that point.

Research firm Canalys forecast in the summer that the worldwide smart watch market will exceed five million unit shipments in 2014.
