Independent app store GetJar is offering the latest version of the Opera Mini browser, following a dispute initiated when Opera launched its own competing store. According to a report from mocoNews.net, the version of Opera Mini 6 offered via GetJar has had the homescreen shortcut to the Opera store removed, being replaced by a link to GetJar. In a statement, Mahi de Silva, EVP of Consumer Mobile at Opera Software, said that “we believe Opera should be everywhere and we love the fact that our fans will now be able to download Opera Mini again from GetJar.”

Opera launched the Opera Mobile Store early last month, using an app storefront platform from Appia. In order to promote the store, it added a “Speed Dial” link to its browser to enable easy access – but this went against the terms of GetJar, due to the fact that it would have ended up distributing a product that promoted an alternative download store. At the time, Patrick Mork, CMO of GetJar, noted that: “this robs GetJar of traffic and therefore of the advertising necessary to keep our service free for the more than 25 million consumers that use GetJar.”

GetJar is offering the Opera Mini 6 browser for Android, BlackBerry, J2ME and Symbian devices, stating that it is “also optimised for tablet browsing.” The browser has more than 90 million users worldwide, and can be used on 3,000 devices.
