Following their introduction last week, the iPad versions of Microsoft’s Office productivity apps have topped the download charts in more than a hundred markets as well as heading the revenue charts in several countries.

According to data from App Annie, Word for iPad is currently the most downloaded free app in 119 countries, and has topped the charts in 125 markets since launch. This is an impressive return for an app launched in 135 markets.

It is currently the highest grossing free app in six markets, having achieved the feat at some point in 21 countries, including the US.

Although the Office apps are free to download, they only offer limited functionality unless users shell out for a subscription to Microsoft’s Office 365 service. This can be carried out within the apps, and with subscriptions starting at $99, it is easy to see how the Office titles have performed strongly in terms of revenue.

Apple will also have benefited from the success of the iPad-optimised Office software, as it takes a 30 per cent cut of the revenue generated from Office 365 subscriptions taken out within the apps.

Excel and PowerPoint, the other two Office apps released for iPad, have also performed strongly in terms of downloads and revenue.

Excel for iPad remains in the top five downloaded free apps in 124 markets, with PowerPoint for iPad doing the same in 119 countries. Excel is currently among the top five grossing apps in 16 markets, while PowerPoint is ranked similarly in four countries.

Microsoft said the Office apps for iPad have been built from the ground up “factoring in the unique nature of touch and functionality” of the Apple tablet.
