Nokia announced several updates to its Ovi Store via its Ovi Blog, including support for additional languages and improved app search capabilities. Perhaps the update with the largest possible impact is the introduction of a new user interface for customers using devices based on the vendor’s mass-market Series 40 platform, who are able to purchase Java apps from the store. Nokia said that this refresh “makes it faster and easier to discover, download and collect great apps, games and more.”

For the store as a whole, the main change trumpeted was spell correction, which it says makes the system “a bit more forgiving when you may hit the wrong button or forget a letter.” New languages supported are Arabic and Hindi, with Series 40 devices supported alongside Nokia’s Symbian OS smartphones. The company said that Arabic is spoken by nearly 350 million people across 25 countries, while Hindi is an official language in India, which has a population of more than one billion people.

Nokia has previously trumpeted the reach of Ovi Store, stating at Nokia World during September 2010 that it is available in 190 countries and 30 languages, with 90 percent of mobile customers served by local stores. The company also described mass-market devices as “an opportunity often ignored,” noting a “real hunger for apps on these devices.” According to figures released by the company, more than two million apps are downloaded from the store each day.
