Nokia has launched a new updated version of its Transport app for Windows Phone 8 that introduces detailed mapping for journeys via public transport.

The app – known as Nokia Transit in North America – has been redesigned specifically for Windows Phone 8 devices such as Nokia’s Lumia 820 and 920.

“We’ve introduced a new segment map that provides a detailed map view for each part of your route,” said Nokia in a blog post. “Just tap or swipe a specific segment of your journey to open a map and a detail view that lets you easily see where you are and where you need to be.”

The Windows Phone 8 app is available from the Windows Phone Store. Beta versions of the new app including the new functionality are available for Windows Phone 7 and Symbian via Nokia Beta Labs.

Nokia Transport is available in over 550 cities and 53 countries worldwide; Nokia says that “coverage is constantly growing.”

Mapping is a major focus for the Finnish vendor. A new Nokia mapping brand (HERE) and strategy was unveiled two weeks ago.
