Games giant Nintendo is set to offer a smartphone app supporting its Miiverse content, marking a rare foray into the mobile space for the company.

In a statement, it said that “starting this Spring”, customers will be able to browse Miiverse from their devices, initially via the browser, but “Nintendo plans to create a dedicated Miiverse app in the future”.

The company did not state which mobile platforms it will target.

Miiverse is a social network designed to support the company’s Wii U games console. It is also being integrated into a number of Wii U games.

To date, Nintendo has largely steered clear of offering its content to mobile device users, with president Satoru Iwata stating some time ago that this was “absolutely not under consideration”.

It had previously been reported that the company was seeing pressure to bolster its mobile presence, in order to capitalise on growth in the smartphone market.
