San Francisco–based developer Path has launched a new app called Kong following beta testing which lets users “create GIF selfies to share with friends”. The app is available on iOS and Android phones, as well as on the Apple Watch.

Users press and hold a button at the bottom of the screen to make quick GIFs, essentially very short clips that play on a loop, of anything they want, add one of the app’s filters, some of which have been inspired by old silent films, and finish off by adding text and emojis.

Each image created can have up to six GIFs.

These can then be sent on private channels to friends or public channels and can also be emailed, saved as a GIF or video, and shared on social media networks like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

“Our beta community quickly adopted it as a fun way to share status updates, have group conversations and create memes,” Path said in a statement.

Users can either be invited to public channels, or choose to join one, with topics ranging from ‘music’ and ‘coffee’ to ‘awkward’ and ‘sanfransisco’ and it’s worth noting that they can have only one image active in each channel, so that no one user can spam a channel.

Path founder Dave Morin told TechCrunch that the company may partner with brands to create channels in the future as a monetisation strategy.
