GPS location-based app developer Navmii now has 3.2 million users, with 920,000 added in the past three months.

Navmii develops free and low-cost GPS navigation apps – such as Navmii GPS Live and Navfree – for iPhone, iPad and Android.
The technology uses mapping data from the user-powered OpenStreetMap project and allows maps to be stored on phones, meaning users don’t always need to be accessing and paying for data.

Navmii’s mapping covers Australia, Canada, Europe, New Zealand and North America and is being rolled out for India, Latin America and South Africa. The Navfree app is already available in Argentina, Brazil and Mexico with uptake in Brazil proving particularly rapid with 25,000 users downloading the navigation app during its first week of release.

The company has also launched a football-related social media platform. Sharethematch allows the delivery of images and video to mobile devices and allows users to check into football stadiums, meet friends, and comment on match performances through their mobile.

Mobile Apps Briefing recently spoke to Navmii CEO Peter Atalla about the success of the company’s freemium model, which it launched more than a year ago.
