Transport app Moovit has topped one million users, after more than doubling its user base in the four months following the launch of the latest version in February.

The Moovit GPS app uses real-time user-generated information to update users about how public transport is running on their proposed journey. It also suggests alternative routes to avoid delays while users can log reports on overcrowding, cleanliness and rankings.

The company began to roll out the app at the end of 2012, with significant growth in Europe. It has seen more recent growth in the Americas where it plans to launch in a number of new cities this month (June).

The free Android and iOS app is available for more than 40 cities around the world, including New York, Barcelona, Rio de Janeiro, Paris and Sydney, as well as the whole of the UK.

“The success we’ve experienced affirms to us that people are hungry for real-time information that can help them make smarter choices about public transit,” said Moovit CEO Nir Erez.

Moovit recently struck a deal with Vodafone Spain which will see the operator’s stores marked on Moovit’s city maps of Madrid and Barcelona.
