Mobile apps could play a significant role in driving the uptake of electric vehicles, with more opportunities emerging for developers, according to research firm Frost & Sullivan.

Although mobile apps designed specifically for electric vehicles are currently at a nascent stage, they have “tremendous scope for innovation and development”, according to the company’s ‘Leveraging Mobile Apps in the Electric Vehicle Market’ report.

Mobile apps can provide electric vehicle users with information about the operation of their vehicle, charging infrastructure, the technology involved, and allow them to share relevant information.

The EU’s plans to introduce more charging stations could drive the need for authentication and payment solutions, providing further opportunities.

Apps also have the potential to engage electric vehicle users to such an extent that they could drive the development of the electric vehicle market.

“The main objective of these mobile apps is to popularise the advantages of EVs and reduce the limitations associated with them,” said Shuba Ramkumar, research analyst with Frost & Sullivan’s Information & Communication Technologies team.
