24MAS, a Sweden-based mobile advertising and app distribution company, acquired the wireless business of THQ, which develops mobile games. In a statement, 24MAS noted that “by continuing to provide both THQ and third-party branded content through contracts with all major carrier groups worldwide, 24MAS has expanded its reach to include over 80 countries, spanning every major continent and market, to become one of the world’s largest carrier distribution networks for wireless applications and services.” The Swedish company also said that it plans to incorporate THQ Wireless’ operations into its “wireless strategy of mobile advertising, content distribution, cloud services and application hosting.” Terms of the deal were not revealed.

Mobile Entertainment reports that THQ will retain some of its smartphone activities going forward, although 24MAS will gain its portfolio of existing Android content. According to THQ’s most recent results, the Wireless business generated revenue of US$1.71 million in the quarter to 31 December 2010, down from US$2.29 million year-on-year. This represented less than 1 percent of its US$314.6 million sales for the period.
