Microsoft has made its Office software available as an iPhone app, allowing users to create, access and edit documents on the Apple smartphone for the first time.

Office Mobile can only be used by subscribers to the company’s Office 365 offering, a cloud-based version of its Office software, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

The app optimises documents for the iPhone screen with files stored on Microsoft’s SkyDrive, SkyDrive Pro or SharePoint collaboration software.

Features include offline editing, quick access to recent documents, the ability to view and edit documents attached to emails and presentation views which allow users to browse slides. The also app supports charts, animations, graphics and shapes.

Mobile Office Mobile requires iOS 6.1 or higher and is available for iPhone 4, 4S and 5.

A Morgan Stanley analyst said in February that Microsoft is losing out on “billions” in revenue by not offering a paid version of Office for the iPad.
